RedLynx Family: Starting a career in the games industry
Kimmo’s first half a year at RedLynx has shown him that people at RedLynx really love what they do
Who are you and what do you do at RedLynx?
My name is Kimmo and I work at RedLynx as a Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst. I work mainly in the mobile projects of our studio but every now and then I help my colleagues on the console side as well.
How did you end up at RedLynx?
I did not have previous experience in the gaming industry so the journey for me has been somewhat different. I’ve been working in the web-analytics field for 8 years now and I’ve always had interest in working in the game industry but really didn’t feel that there were positions where I could use my expertise in games. But during the last two of years Analyst positions started to pop up everywhere, also in games industry. So when there was an opening in the summer of 2016, I was really pumped because I felt that this was a perfect mix of what I could do professionally and be part of this wonderful world of game making.
You started at RedLynx in October 2016. How have your first 3 months at RedLynx been?
Challenging but Amazing. Getting into a new industry is always hard but everybody has been really helpful and patient as some things take more time. Overall it feels like people really love what they do here which is not always the case in other companies. Also really pro-stuff! Everybody seems to be on the top of their game in their own fields.
What does a Business Intelligence Analyst do? What is your typical day like at RedLynx?
Typical day really depends on if we are just starting the development, finishing it or the game has already launched. I think the main role for BI analyst is to bring insight from customer behavior into development and decision making before and after the game has launched. Basically we are driving forward the data driven culture here in RedLynx. A typical tasks would be designing the tracking of the games, reporting and of course customer analysis so that the designers understand our players better.
What makes someone an awesome Business Intelligence Analyst?
Being good with numbers does not hurt 😉 Another good factors in my opinion is a natural interest on how the world and especially digital products work. Also understanding the person you are explaining or reporting findings to is key because what we want is that we all understand our players better and that everybody here at RedLynx gets interested about customer behavior. A spreadsheet full of numbers is heaven for me but it does not work for 95% of people.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
Right now it is just to get in to how everything works and who does what etc. In my field usually it is to find meaningful insights that will either prevent something bad from happening or insights that can really affect the customer experience and therefore have a business impact in our end. Anybody can make findings but to separate the meaningful stuff from the useless is harder.
What do you like most about working at RedLynx?
The people here are awesome and really professional. Also it is great to get to know people from all over the world!
What is the craziest thing you have experienced at RedLynx so far?
On my second week Antti Ilvessuo asked me to lift my shirt up so that he could draw a six pack on my stomach with a marker. Luckily it was not water proof.
Any words of advice for those wanting to get into the games industry?
Coming outside of the industry all I can say that be patient and keep an eye on what is happening in the industry. It could be that what skills are not needed now could be really important tomorrow!
Any last words? 😉
What do you call Postman Pat when he is retired? Pat.
